Looks like Coco’s pups are following in her sister’s footsteps! Upon close examination today, I found that my "bi-colored" male is really a black sable like great grandpa  Shep! How fascinating, and two of my dual girls are also going to sable out, 1 into a dark gray, and the other like her brother! The rest of the pups are solid blacks! With so much attention being placed on the Beauty pups now, after all they are at that fun age already, I feel like we are neglecting Coco’s litter—But wait—in two weeks the first group will all be gone to their new homes, the weather will warm up (I hope!) and these guys will be ready to start showing some personality. That’s when you will be "overloaded" with pictures! J So be sure to visit this site often.

3/27/99 Update from Tina Barber

With so much attention being given to her sister, Beauty’s pups, poor Coco was almost ignored. After all, everyone was watching the FIRST Artus litter growing weekly! Nobody was interested in regressing back to newborns.

Well, now its time to take note of Artus’s second litter! While his third is only 2 days old and will rightfully be neglected as we watch these gorgeous Coco pups blooming. His fourth litter is not due for another four weeks and we plan to keep you updated on those pups as well as continuing to provide you with updates on the Beauty pups at 3, 6, 9 and 12 months! Hopefully this will give everyone a chance to see how this magnificent NB stud is affecting the Shiloh genepool.

Shanna on Palm Sunday Shanna on Palm Sunday

The Coco pups are very similar to the Beauty litter, except for colors. Instead of just one, this litter has 3 pups that were thought to be duals but are actually black sables, 1 male and 2 females! If they end up looking like Shanna, they will certainly STOP TRAFFIC when they mature! Wow!

Karen asked me to do another "guess" at coats. Please remember that this is only a "guess" (think of it as a game of chance!) since it is truly impossible to determine coats at this early an age. Often I have taken "guesses" at 5 ½ -6/12 weeks but it’s really the 7th week before you can be sure. Since this litter was born a week premature, it makes it even more difficult. Nevertheless, my best guesses were as follows:

Males: (huge black and black sable) plush, the other 2 blacks???

Females: One black sable and 3 of the solid blacks—plush, the other black sable and her 2 black sisters ???

Hopefully when I return (in 2 weeks) for my next evaluation I will be able to tell you a lot more about this litter!

These pups seem even more active than Beauty’s were so trying to get all 10 into one picture became the impossible dream! I did manage to get some bits and pieces of pups in groups, while the others were going in all sets of directions! On my next trip, I will try to get lots of help holding them in one place since we all plan to drive out to Long Island together to attend the BADASS Specialty on 4/11. Lisa, Lyn and Mark can assist Karen in holding the pups, so we should have some really great shots for you then. Be sure to bookmark this spot and return often for more updates!

April 12th Update

Upon seeing the pups this week I could not help but notice how much they have grown......but.... since they are only 5 weeks old, I am still not sure on all of the coats! Hopefully by next week I will be able to give you a more accurate prediction, at this point it looks like that two black males and the sable male are plush while the third black male is still questionable. The darker sable female and three black females are plush while the lighter sable female probably will be smooth and the fourth black female is still questionable as to coat.

Since the sexes are split evenly I figured I would have no problem getting some updated pictures of each group...WRONG! These guys have even MORE drive then the Beauty pups had! As soon as you got one on the couch he/she would be running from one end to the other, grabbing the sheet, or trying to commit hara-kiri by DIVING off the couch! No fear in this group! They wanted the run of the entire living room, not just part of the couch ;-) This is very unusual for 5 week old Shiloh pups. At 7 weeks, maybe. Normally puppies this age will be more then happy to sit still in unfamiliar territory, especially if they are way up on a couch! I expect to see some real working qualities coming out during the Temperament Tests, so if you have been looking for a SAR or SCH prospect, this is it!

It was fun trying to get these pictures, It took two people "holding" them in place, then on the count of 3, they let go & I snapped a picture of whatever puppy was left!

Yes, we tried to start with 5, but usually the ones on the end were gone with the hands, so I could not get them into a "group" shot! Next week I will bring some more helpers, and maybe we can manage some better shots outdoors, so pray for good weather ;-) I hope you enjoy these pictures of the Wild Bunch!

April 26th Update

The DC trip may have worn me out some, but I honestly believe these pups are heavier than Beauty's were at this age, even the smooths! I also noticed that a few of them are already starting to work their ears. One of the females had her's up perfectly until I started taking pictures. (Since this was their bedtime and we had to use the flash, we apologize for the poor quality of these pictures! Karen never had a chance to remove her jacket!)

We just wanted to show you how they are coming along. Be sure to come back next week for the complete temperament test evaluation report and lots of great pictures!

Artus at 1 Year

We are expecting dogs with lots of bone-chest-movement and working temperaments (like Domino) from Coco's side and super heads, sound structure, awesome (courageous) temperaments with hips to die for from Artus!

Trillium Artus Zum Sohrewald

bCH Ptd.   Shenandoah's Coco Bear of Zion

Coco is a grey sable smooth coat, daughter of bCH Ptd. Longobardi’s Domino of Zion, CGC and JNK Smoke’n Black Bear of Zion ROM, full sister of NS bCH Ursel’s Black Beauty of Zion, CGC and bCH Shenandoah Luke Skywalker of Zion, and grand-daughter of the highest living ROM stud GV ab CH. Bionic Black Smoke of Zion, CGC, OFA GOOD, ROM ). She won a BEST in SHOW at her first (and to date only ) show appearance last May. She has a beautiful head and trot. She is 26 inches in height and has a medium soft temperament.

Artus: After years of carefully researching the Altdeutsche Shaeferhunde lines and breeders, Tina Barber, breed founder of the Shiloh Shepherds, personally selected Artus as the first (new blood) import puppy to be utilized in the future development of the magnificent Shilohs. Artus has been fully recognized by the ISSR, Inc as a RED/WHITE papered Shiloh. These flock guardian dogs are bred for excellent hips and temperaments. Artus's pedigree shows that out of 62 dogs in 5 generations only 1 FAST NORMAL (OFA, FAIR-GOOD) is listed. The rest are all "a" Normal (OFA, GOOD-EXCELLENT). All the dogs in his pedigree have earned a working title, be it in Schutzhund or guiding eyes. Artus arrived in the US on March 16, 1998. "After 23 hours in a crate, when I picked Artus up at the airport, he stepped out on the dock like he owned the place! I put a leash on him, and he walked down a flight of (open-grated) icy stairs like it was nothing! In the dark, strange new place, he grabbed my scarf to play and slipped out of his collar, while a plane was taking off! I know that many 3 mo. old dogs would have spooked under such conditions! I just said ‘here’ and he came right back to my side, so that I could put his collar back on. Who could ask for a better reaction?"* *(taken from the Altdeutsche Schaeferhunde article written by Tina Barber in the SSDCA Newsletter, July 1998.) Artus received a good OFA preliminary hip rating at 12 months. He is over 27 inches in height, weighs in at 117 pounds and is currently being trained in obedience and beginning Schutzhund by Tina Barber.

Our first litter with Beauty and Artus turned out to be larger in size than the average Shiloh litter with huge heads and chests. We are anticipating similar results with this litter! Don't miss out on these pups--reserve one now!

All of our puppies are home-raised with children and temperament tested and conformation evaluated by the BREED FOUNDER at 7 weeks of age.
